On Worldviews
Worldviews, Uniforms, Sons and Daughters.
A worldview - It's a little bit like a uniform. Something we 'put on' each and every day. Having worn glasses and contact lenses since 2nd grade, my worldview is about as close to a perfect analogy as possible. Simply put - it impacts everything. It's huge. Ginormous.
But what is the correct worldview? Why is worldview such a big deal?
Let's tackle the second question first. After all, if we can't agree on it being a big deal, does it matter which is the 'correct' worldview?
So why the big deal - worldview? A host of reasons I can present - you probably as well. But I think this is the bottom line:
If and when you ever acquire power, influence, your worldview will directly impact:
- How you behave
- What you promote
- What you support and attempt to advance
- Why you defend whom you defend
Simple keystrokes to Wiki are somewhat adequate to define worldview. But the definition isn't the real problem. I think the essence of what I'm trying to say here is summed up really well by Morgan Snyder in his book Becoming a King; "…the power entrusted to most men often brings harm."
In a world with dramatically or even diametrically opposed worldviews, if/when one worldview acquires dominating power, that view can exert control over the opposing worldview. Isn't that kind of the bottom line? It's in almost every great story. Every great movie. I'm supposed to be on that throne. That's my inheritance. That's my crown; my position; my right. I have the solution, the cure, the key, etc. etc. Mine. Mine. Mine
Okay - having resolved 'why' worldview is such a big deal - let's tackle the 'which is correct worldview' question. So now we enter the realm of controversy. A ginormous clash of worldviews is becoming more clear each day. So let me jump in the middle of the battle with this: given there are so many worldviews out there for your choice - they all establish a trajectory toward only 2 bottom lines.
- A Kingdom worldview. Where a loving God, who is King, has set realities in place and all are either His Sons or Daughters
- A 'Tiny Gods' worldview. All are gods in and of ourselves - you do you. Nothing really absolute.
Now I suggest some ground rules. You don't have to agree with me on worldviews or anything else for that matter. But you will have to defend the way you think - gracefully. Gracefully. So that rules out twitter blasts and social media attack.
Kingdom worldview IS NOT RELIGION. Far from it. Religion is part of the problem. I am talking about a Kingdom. If you read this having been raised in the Western society in my opinion you have a pretty serious bias built in. I can explain what I mean here.
I believe Ravi Zacharias does a super "boil down" of the essential elements required by any realistic position on a correct worldview. I linked to it earlier, but here's an excerpt and link to a short video by Ravi:
"…all humans, regardless of what religion they practiced or whether they had no religious beliefs, had to answer four basic questions: Where do I come from? Why am I here? How should I treat people? Where am I going? Origin, Meaning, Morality, Destiny." (watch 4:39 minute video here)
My Pastor Robert Morris, states in slightly differently but with great clarity.
"How you see the world. How you see life. How you tend to answer some big questions. Your worldview must address:
- Origin - how did I get here?
- Meaning - why am I here?
- Morality - how do I define good and evil?
- Destiny - what happens to me after death?

As I write this I sit in my home office. Just above my desk is a painting by Bev Doolittle. An aspen grove in beautiful white and black colors. It's called "Woodland Encounter". But like all of her paintings, there is more than meets the first glance. Superimposed amidst the aspen, is another story. Samwise Gamgee, in Lord of the Rings, says it this way: I wonder what sort of a tale we've fallen into?”
